Here is my image of the matter. Probably, much of this is not a discovery for you, but if it helps at least someone, that will be my personal victory.

    1. How we get involved

From my point of view all people can be divided in 2 major groups: reckless and not. The first are always ready to rush into a risk when they have any opportunity for that; the second always think twice, weigh the risks and if there is even a slim probability of a failure, they will never get involved in this.

I suppose it was just the same for the majority of us in the beginning. One was passing by, another went in and made a bet… There is one same thing in all these stories: enormous emotional power in the first time. More and more in the following times.

All these emotions can be compared to a pendulum. The more you swing it, the less you control the situation.

For example, you won an equivalent of your 2 years’ wages. You are elated and get into drugged-like state. You neglect sleep and food, you run around like a cut-off chicken. Here comes the pendulum effect. You are affected by such burst of hormones that you can’t stop playing. You simply can’t whip yourself into shape and get the overwhelming urge to play. As a result, you get on tilt and lose all the money. Pendulum swings in the opposite direction. You feel depressed and apathetic, you realize your broken dreams and hopes, you feel like shit. This cycle repeats every time and it is almost impossible to stop the pendulum. As the time goes, you forget all negative emotions and get fresh desire to play, you want to experience the same high and mojo.

Every time you win more compared to your income, the pendulum gains altitude as well as negative impact. It is a snowball gathering speed and size and falling on a gambler. Really small, almost invisible in the begging, it grows into a huge ball which can’t be stopped. We are all familiar with the consequences of this race.

    2. Is there anything good about this snowball?

Almost every gambler cursed that first time, just the same like an alcoholic or a drug addict. I’m convinced that 90% of you wish you hadn’t hit that first big win which was the beginning.

What seemingly advantages can such a destructive hobby bring to a person? In fact, this is a snowball which forces the person to take actions and hits him out of his comfort zone. Since a man is a lazy creature, he is never willing to take actions while he is in his comfort zone. Being under constant stress you change the way you think and act and if you stop you’ll be smashed by the snowball.

This is way too many letters, dude. I've got short version for this.
If you play, you are fucked. If you win at least once, you are fucked for your life.

    Ahahah) That's truth!

By the way there are a lot of fair ideas in this article. I have read somwhere that gamling addiction can be compared only with heroin addiction. It is stronger then alcohol or tobacco addiction.

all those are in your brain, even heroin addiction, most of the drug adictions all in the brain, same as gambling. it's not like you are dependant on some substance physically, but rather mentally. check this video

I agree with the topic starter. Online is good to play Netent or something you can't play offline. But online is not that fascinating compared to offline.
